Driving for Points

There are several airlines and a hotel that is offering bonuses through car rentals.

One of the better ones is with Budget Rental Car where you can get up to 10,000 American Airline points for a 10 day rental. The promotion ends soon on Sept 30, 2012 so if you live near a participating location that offers cheap rentals for 10 days, this is worth the cost since buying 10,000 AA points would cost $325. Make sure you use coupon code MUAZ013 and BCD #U072421 to save 30%.

Another one I received through email is with Southwest Airlines where you can get up to 2,400 Rapid Reward points for a 4+day rental. Remember to use K024769 in the AWD field, MUAA037 in the Coupon Code field to save 35%, and provide your Rapid Rewards account number to receive your points. Promotion ends November 30, 2012.

A smaller promotion is with Priority Club where you can earn 1,000 bonus points and save 35% on a one or more day rental on any car. Promotion ends Dec 31, 2012. Valid only in the US, Canada, Puerto Rico, and Europe.

New Girl in the Air has a post where you can earn 4x American Airline Miles with Hertz. Promotion ends Nov 30, 2012.

So if you have an upcoming rental, make sure you take advantage of these great car rental promotions.

Earn 2,500 points with Wyndham for $1

Here are 2 easy ways to earn points with Wyndham Rewards. The first is with Liberty Mutual where you can get 500 points for receiving a no obligation quote. If you are shopping around for car or home insurance then this is a fairly easy way to do it. Just get your car and drivers license information handy!

Another way is through Great Fun. You do have to register your credit card where they will charge you a $1 for the first month but you get 2,000 Wyndham points. You can cancel before the month ends and still get to keep the points. My points have already posted and I already canceled my membership with no problems.

These points are good to add to the other promotions that Wyndham is currently running.

Aloha! $465 from NY to Hawaii nonstop!

For those of you on the east coast, now is the time to book your Hawaii vacation for the holidays! You can go to Fly.com and search for the best available dates that will get you this great rate. Right now Sept-Dec seems to be offering these rates if you fly out and back on a weekday. When I did my search I found non stop flights from EWR to HNL on United for $465...that is such a great deal! Other cities that have been showing great flight deals are Dallas (DFW), Miami (MIA), and Detroit (DTW).

Remember if you are going to Honolulu, make sure to look for Groupons for >50% off activities.
Happy Vacationing!

Southwest Luv

Southwest is currently running a nationwide Rapid Rewards promotion where you can earn double points on every Southwest flight through November 15, 2012. You must register, book, and complete the flight by this date. This means you will earn 24 points/dollar on Business Select, 20 points/dollar on Anytime Fares and 12 points/dollar on Wanna Get Away fares. If you have the Chase Southwest Card, you can book the flights and earn 2 points/dollar spent on tickets. I like doubling up!

SWA is also doing a contest where you could be the star of their upcoming Rapid Rewards Ad Campaign. Your trip must have been taken after 3/7/11 using Rapid Rewards points and you need to upload pics featuring you on that vacation.

Apply for Potentially "Merged" Airlines Credit Cards

It was not too long ago that Continental merged with United and the Chase Continental credit card was no longer available. Luckily I had applied for this card and canceled before it was discontinued. This allowed me to also apply for the new Chase United card after the merger.

This got me thinking that with the AirTran/ Southwest merger and the American Airlines/US Airways merger hinted by Apple that one counterpart will no longer offer their credit card. Already Barclays is no longer offering the AirTran credit card, so will this be the same for the US Airways Barclays card or American Airlines Citi card? It is too soon to tell as there is no offiicial word but I think it would be a good idea to apply for both of these cards just in case one is no longer offered. They may even come out with a new card all together if the merger does happen. This will not be for some time though but its a good idea to start thinking about it.

Currently Barclays is offering the card with $89 annual fee and comes with 30,000 bonus miles with first purchase, up to 10,000 miles with a balance transfer which includes a fee, two $99 companion passes, first class check-ins, one US Airways club day pass, and flight redemptions for 5,000 fewer miles. The link also offers a $49 annual fee card offering 15,000 miles after first purchase.

There is also a Business card for a $79 annual fee which offers 25,000 after first purchase and a no annual fee Business Card offering 5,000 miles with first purchase.

This card is also reported to be churnable. I don't currently have this card so I'll defintitely include it in my next churn.

Citi is currently offering the AAdvantage card with $95 annual fee waived the first year and offers 40,000 miles after you make $3,000 in spend in the first 3 months. The card also comes with 1st bag fee waived, priority boarding, and you will earn 10% of AAdvantage redeemed miles back. Unfortunately it states that it is only available for new applicants and not availabe to any prior or current card member. Citi has in the past offered better mileage bonus offers but who knows if they will offer this high amount in the near future.

They are also offering a business version with practically the same bonus and benefits and it doesn't state that you can't get it if you have had the personal card.  If you have had the business version before, you are not eligible to get the bonus again.

Again this is only my spectulation but its good to think about given the history with the past two airline mergers. I do not receive commission to any of the links in this post. If there are better offers out there defintitely let me know in the comments.

US City in Review: Santa Fe, NM

I had a chance to visit Santa Fe, NM and surrounding area this summer, and I never knew how much there was to do or see here.  Below are the attractions and places I went to and recommend if you decide to visit this city. One of the only airlines that I know of  that will still fly into this small airport (SAF) is American Airlines. If you decide to fly to Albuquerque instead, it is an hr or so ride by car or you can even take the Rail Runner between these cities.

One of the many places tourists visit when they go to the city is the Plaza. It is full of shops, eating places, and on the weekend will have jewelry vendors on the sidewalks, foodstands and other forms of entertainment.  You can spend most of the day here walking around window shopping, people watching, or grabbing food and drinks especially during happy hour!

Another place I recommend visiting during events is El Rancho de Los Golondrinas which is a short drive west of Santa Fe. They host many different events here such as the Renaissance Fair, Harvest Festival, and Civil War Reenactments to name a few.  When I went, they were hosting the Santa Fe Wine Festival. We were able to taste wines from around the state for a minimal fee for as much wine tastings as you wanted or could handle! There were also arts and craft and food vendors there which we enjoyed in between our tastings. On a side note, did you know that wine has been produced in NM since the 1600s by Spanish Missionaries for religious purposes. They couldn't wait for Spain to send over more wine :-) So NM has many wineries in which you can do wine tastings which I also took advantage of! There are quite a few near Santa Fe area.

Just a short drive north of Santa Fe is the Pueblo of Tesuque Flea Market. This is an open air flea market and they are open Fri-Sun from 9am-4pm March thru December. Many vendors come here to sell clothes, jewelry, and decor. I couldn't take any pictures because it wasn't allowed inside, however, if you like haggling or browsing, I recommend stopping by.

New Mexico is known for its southwest flavor and delicious food. I have to say I was hooked on their food and wanted more! One place I loved and highly recommend is Maria's of Santa Fe. They are known and raved for their 100 Margaritas made with REAL tequilla. Real tequila is only made in Mexico and must contain 51% agave juice. Their food is also amazing, I recommend the green chile soup!

Santa Fe and surrounding areas still have buildings and structures made in the adobe style. I think it adds to the uniqueness of the city and they make great pictures!

If you are going to Santa Fe, I recommend renting a car to explore the city and the surrounding area. Bring lotion/sunscreen, a hat, your camera, and your sense of adventure. You will be surprised all that this city and  area has to offer and you never know what you will discover here

Delta Skypesos with Suntrust

If you had gotten a Suntrust checking account which earns Delta Skypesos earlier in the year, then you can take advantage of this method.  Million Miles Secrets has posted about this method where you can use your Suntrust debit card to earn miles. I tried this last month where I went to a large supermarket mention in his blog and got a $600 money order which I used to pay rent and another $200 to convert to cash to use on vacation (just in case). It costed 80cents per MO. Within a week, I saw the miles posted to my account! Finally a way where I can earn points by paying rent and other things!

As he suggests, do not abuse this method or take money orders and redeposit them to your Suntrust account as this may raise red flags but this is a great way to earn miles for transactions that you wouldn't have otherwise. Have you used this method for other things? I would love more suggestions, Thanks!

Finally my Free Hawaii Trip!

I remember when I was in Middle School, I asked my mom if we could go to Hawaii for vacation. She told me to call the airline to see how much it costs. Well I actually did call and was disappointed at how much it would be and thought I could never afford to go there. Well here is how I proved myself wrong...

I first started with the points and miles hobby 2 years ago when my coworker introduced me and directed me to the Frugal Travel Guy website. My coworker talked about his upcoming trips that he was taking for free! I couldn't believe it at first but when I started to read the blog and the way to go about doing it...I was convinced that this would work for me. While reading I came upon the post of "Hawaii in Business Class and 6 Nights Hotel $90" and I knew I wanted to take that trip to Hawaii that I had always dreamed of as a kid!

To get there I had initially applied for the Chase Checking account and Chase credit card with Continental when it was available back then which gave me a total of 50k points. When Continental merged with United, those Continental points were converted to United points. I also made sure to cancel the credit card so I could later apply for the United Card which earned me an additional 55k points when that offer was available. I used 80k United points which gave me 2 economy tickets to HNL.

Admittingly for this trip we used my parents timeshare and stayed at the Wyndham Royal Gardens at Waikiki, however, I did have enough points to stay at the Holiday Inn Waikiki Beach Comber by applying for the Chase Priority Club credit card for 80k points and to stay at the Courtyard Waikiki by applying for the Chase Marriott credit card for 70k points. So technically the hotel stay would have also been free :) Here is a great post by the Points Guy of the available hotels to use on the islands with points.

For the activities there, I had posted before about using Groupon to get 50% or more off activities. This saved us a lot of money and we had a wonderful time enjoying the different things to do at Oahu. I was also able to do a timeshare presentation which was surprisingly quick and I was able to get $125 to use on activities I didn't find on Groupon, like a waterfall hike.

My Mom was very excited to go with me...she said it was the best trip she has ever been on. With good credit and a good plan of credit card churning, you too can get that free trip to Hawaii or anywhere else you want to go :)

Thank you Frugal Travel Guy for featuring my post as a Sunday Success Story! I am truly grateful that I had this opportunity with my Mom :)

Oooh Canada! 2 Hotel Credit Cards for Canadians

There are currently 2 hotel credit cards that are offering more bonus points for Canadians. They are Best Western and Choice Privileges.

Delta Points posted about a 50,000 points Best Western Card with no annual fee! Get 20k points for the first purchase and 30k points after 1,000 spend before Oct 31, 2012. You even get upgraded to elite status after 6,000 in spend within one year.

When Double Wides Fly posted about a 24,000 points Choice Privileges card with no annual fee. You get 8k points after first purchase and 16k points after $300 in spend before February 14, 2013.

These cards bonuses are only for Canadian residents but I will keep on searching for US cards with these great bonus offers. Disclosure: These are not my affiliate links so I don't receive anything for them. I just thought these were worth mentioning.
